“Gay Peril”

'The Ultimate Anti-Gay Marriage Ad'

I will have to assume that this video was co-authored by a comedian and his videographer. They framing of this infomercial is that of a parodied yet realistic view of how opponents of gay marriage feel about marriage equality. The video starts out with a seemingly traditional housewife setting the table for dinner. In comes the husband looking all downtrodden. The wife says “Hi honey” in a content manner and then notices her husband’s attitude to where she follows with a question “What’s wrong?” The husband replies in a desperate tone, “their trying to make gay marriage legal!” Horrified, the wife drops the plate she is holding shattering it and cries “Oh my god” hugging her husband. She then asks her husband in a woeful tone, “what’s going to happen to our marriage?!” To where he replies equally woeful, “I don’t know!” The wife then states “I don’t want to get a divorce and marry a woman” and the husband consoles her and says “I know”. The husband then walks over to the wall infuriated saying “Why do these gays wanna destroy our civilization!?” And the wife in an alarmed tone says “I’m so scared”. In comes their daughter and in an inquiring manner says… “Mommy? Daddy? if gay people are allowed to get married, will you still love me?” Both parents have ambiguous stares. In a depressed manner, the father caresses his daughter and in a reassuring manner tells his daughter “let’s not hope it comes to that. He pulls his confused daughter in for a hug and the mother joins in for a family hug. End scene. The next thing we hear is a commentator voice; he says “help keep straight couples from getting divorced and hating their children.” The screen goes black and in big bold letters in caps along with the commentator says “OPPOSE GAY MARRIAGE” Followed by the coalition that paid for the ad “The coalition of people whose lives are ruined whenever other people are treated equally”
If I were to name a few things we have learned in class to this video, they are that of “yellow peril” but in this situation it is more of “gay peril” and sexual identity. The couple makes many mental short cuts to make social judgments about gay marriage. There is a controlling image and a culture of a fear of gay marriage. There are obvious externalizations on how the parents show how they feel in front of their daughter. There is a social construct of what we have learned since we were born.

  1. This is a good start to an analysis of this video, which seeks to use satire to point out the ridiculous nature of many of the arguments against marriage equality. Contextualizing the video a bit more and going deeper into some of the concepts you mention would be helfpul.
